Adult Learner Typologies There are four types of adult learner typologies. They include:

Type I or Independent adult education organizations - These exist solely to teach adult learners, and they would include institutions such as the University of Phoenix. They target adults, often with degrees, who want to change careers, need continuing education, or want to finish degrees, and they offer a variety of courses, mostly in business, but in other areas, as well. Content addressed includes everything from degree programs to individual courses for students finishing up their degrees.

Type II or Educational institutions -- These institutions include higher educational and primary and secondary schools that also offer adult education. They are primarily for young people, but they do serve adults in at least some capacity. An example of this would be a

Participants would be parents of the children, or even kids who dropped out. The classes are mainly geared to assimilating the adults and adding to their basic work skills. Content could be anything the parents needed to know to get better jobs and help their families.
Type III or Quasi-educational organizations -- These include groups like libraries, museums, and health agencies, and they exist to offer education and other basic needs. An example would be the county library or health department. They are not technically schools, but they are…
